Activa Celluclay is a finely textured, non-toxic material that handles like clay, and needs no firing. No special tools are required. Just mix it with water.
Celluclay adheres to almost any surface. Dried forms can be sawed, sanded, nailed, or waterproofed. Finish with any kind of paint or varnish. Dries permanently hard.
Celluclay II — The ultimate white papier maché, Celluclay II has the same working properties as regular Celluclay, and is a bright white color.
Celluclay is a greatly improved paper mache. It handles very much like a sculptural clay, but does not have to be fired and can be worked wet or dry. Working with it only a few times will give you a feel for the material.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix in a plastic bag or mixing bowl. Add 32oz., of water to 1 lb. of celluclay. Warm water mixes faster. Knead untill firm like clay or stiff dough with no dry spots. If mixture is too soft, add more dry mache; if too dry, add water sparingly. For use by very small children, add a few drops of liquid detergent when mixing. Mixed celluclay in a plastic bag will keep a room temperature for some time, or indefinitly in a refrigerator.
TOOLS NEEDED:
An inexpensive plastic or wood modeling tool, a small bowl of water, some paper towels, a Formica or waxed paper working surface, and a simple drying rack are the essentials.
WORKING WITH CELLUCLAY:
Store in a plastic bag so it will not dry out. Keep fingers moist but not wet. Dip any objects used for stamping designs and tools into water.
ARMATURES
These can be syrofoam shapes, cardboard or other tubes, boxes, cans, jars, clay pots, screen wire, etc.
ADDITIVES:
For some molding, model train layout work, relief maps, or when faster setting up or drying is desired, moling plaster may be added. Between 10% to 50% by volume is suggested. The plaster can be dissolved in the water with dry celluclay.
BOTTLE FIGURES:
Perhaps a clown, angel, animal or bird. heads can be made by gluing a syrofoam ball to a cork or the top of the bottle. Cover with at least 4mm thickness of celluclay.
Sculpt with simple tools or with fingers. Add shaped pieces (feet, tail, etc.) for details.
JEWELRY:
Paper mache jewelry is light and durable. Form bracelets around a jar covered in waxed paper and remove while damp. Pin and earring backs can be found in hobby shops and jewelers. Paint or stamp little designs on your jewelry, glue on stones or decorate with string.
HOLLOW PAPER-MACHE WARE:
Wrap armature in foil, plastic or waxed paper before covering with celluclay. While wet score deeply with knife so that when nearly dry two separate haves can be removed. On completion of drying, re-join with glue, tape or more clay.
MOLDING:
For molding Celluclay in plastic molds, coat the inside of the mold with liquid detergent thinned with water. Be sure clay is FIRM. Press into the lowest partsfirst and work from the center out. Loosen edges of mold and turn out onto drying rack.
DRYING:
For a hurry-up project, accelerated drying may be desired. Hair dryers or an oven with a temperature up to 190 degrees C. may be used.
FINISHING -SURFACE TEXTURE
Stamp with interesting-shaped object, or add glued-on string, button, costume jewels, yarn, etc.
PAINTING:
Almost any kind of paint. Posted and acrylic are ideal.
SCULPTURE:
For sculpture, a patina can be achieved by thin washes of varigated colors applied as sculpture dries. After drying, sand highlights and polish with paper toweling. Finish with wax or varnish.
SEALERS:
Paper-mache may be sealed with shellac, clear plastic, varnish, or nail polish. Try to use sealers that are compatable with your paint; for example, varnish over enamel.
