Although the editor claims that this book is intended as a handbook for everyone whose work involves the use of ornament, it is quite a bit more than that. Drawn from Humbert's private collection, these 1000 representative examples, identified by time and place of origin, comprise a rich and diverse source of copyright-free design for art and craft use.
Ornamental design, Humbert says, is based upon several primary forms: square, circle, triangle, continuous linear forms, vegetable forms and animal forms. Spanning centuries and cultures, these basic forms reappear again and again. Moreover, compositional rules dating from antiquity are still valid today. His examination of symbols and their uses, the evolution of design motifs, and the psychological significance of patterns and designs, is highly thought-provoking. In essence, this book provides the reader with a guide for making thoughtful, conscious choices about the use of design elements, while offering 1000 wonderful patterns and ornamental motifs from which to choose.
Unabridged republication of the work originally published by Office du Livre, Fribourg, Switzerland, 1970, under the title Ornamental Design.
