A highly regarded member of the "Ashcan School" of American painting, John Sloan (1871-1951) was also a remarkable teacher who influenced many contemporary artists with his talks on art theory and practice at the Art Students League in New York. This book is an illustrated, practical record of Sloan's talks and instructional advice, transcribed and edited by his wife. Beginning with observations on drawing as the basis of visual art, Sloan discusses line, tone, texture, light and shade, composition, design, space, perspective, and related issues. Later chapters deal with figure drawing, painting, landscape and mural painting, painting technique, etching and other media. Each chapter features a wealth of helpful suggestions and exercises, along with Sloan's thought-provoking opinions. The text is enhanced with 46 illustrations, including 23 of Sloan's paintings and 8 photographs.
