Oil Colours have been used in various forms since the 15th Century. The popularity of oil colour can be attributed to its extraordinary versatility, offering the artist excellent results from the traditional techniques of blending and glazing, impasto and scumbling. Winsor & Newton began making oil colours in 1832, swiftly developing and subsequently maintaining a reputation for excellence and consistency.
Today, Winsor & Newton offer Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colour, a genuine oil colour which can be thinned with water and cleaned with soap and water. This enables the artist
to thin and clean up with water rather than hazardous solvents such as turpentine or white spirit (mineral spirit).
Artisan is made from modified linseed oil and modified safflower oil. It has been specifically developed to appear and work just like conventional oil colour; the depth of
colour, buttery consistency, lightfastness, opacity / transparency, performance and drying times of Artisan, allow artists' to use this range for all oil colour techniques.
A range of unique Artisan Water Mixable Mediums has also been developed for more applications to ensure the artist has everything necessary to paint with the Artisan colours,
without requiring turpentine or white spirits (mineral spirits).
