Anyone Can Paint
In the introduction to this book, Helen Van Wyk says, "Anyone can paint." It's true. You don't need talent or permission, just a desire to try. In the 1960's, when Helen began to travel around the country, she discovered that many people found their initial attempts frustrating.
Helen's personal appearances doing demonstrations before art groups and teaching basic painting principles to students all over America encouraged many to say, I’ll give it another try."
Since her television show first made its appearance on PBS, she was fortunate to have been able to reach and encourage many more aspiring artists than her travels ever allowed her. Helen’s show, "Welcome To My Studio," gave rise to this book.
From this book's table of contents one can see the value of the instruction that has come from her many years as a painter and a teacher. Some of the chapters include:
Making the subject fit the canvas. This chapter is devoted to getting a good composition. In it Helen shows how to go about composing a portrait, a still life and a landscape. The chapter is illustrated with appropriate pictures.
Reflections in water and other shiny surfaces. We all marvel at paintings that successfully record a reflection of a boat in still water, or a reflection on a table from an object. In this chapter Helen demonstrates how to get the dimension that directs the way to paint reflections.
How to paint glass. “How can you paint something that has no color?” people have asked Helen. She takes her reader back to the basic painting premise that paint can do anything that light can do.
Part of a model's likeness. This chapter shows the influence that a model's hair has on his or her likeness. Also included, is a chart that gives you the color mixtures for all types of hair.
The techniques of the Old Masters. The techniques of glazing which the Old Masters used extensively in their paintings is illustrated with a step-by-step progression that transports you from underpainting to the finishing touches.
These are but a few, of the many chapters in this valuable book. While it's true that "Anyone can paint", the instruction in "Welcome to My Studio" will help you to paint better.
