Victorian Ornaments & Designs

This collection of rare plates dating from 1847 is a strong testament to the Victorian love of ornamentation. Designers of the era borrowed freely from a wealth of historical influences, as shown here in plates adapted by the celebrated illustrator, Samuel Leith, from Egyptian carpeting, Grecian railings, Elizabethan ceiling patterns, Italianate ironwork as well as Flemish, French, Moorish and other design traditions. Presented in a wide variety of formats, sizes and shapes (borders, corners, frames, rosettes, mortised cuts, allover patterns, etc.), these 190 exquisitely rendered illustrations were originally meant as both a guide for the building trades and a source of design inspiration. They will prove ideal for sparking the imaginations of today's architects, graphic designers, restorers, homeowners and craftspeople, as well as being a quick and ready source of immediately useable ornamental graphics for copyright-free use in a host of projects.
Republication of all the plates in the work originally published as The Tradesman's Book of Ornamental Designs by J. Ainsworth, Manchester, England, 1847. 190 illustrations. 64pp. 9 3/8"X12 1/4". 1/2000
