Oil pastels are made up of pigments, and oils and waxes. In recent years oil pastels have become an immensely popular drawing material. They are characterised by their brilliant colours and their buttery softness, which enables them to release colour easily.

VAN GOGH OIL PASTELS
Van Gogh Oil Pastels have very strong colour intensity, are exceptionally soft and are therefore pleasant to use. With Van Gogh Pastels you can start working straight away. All you need to make a pastel drawing is a surface. Oil pastels can be used on a variety of surfaces. In addition to paper and cardboard, wood and earthenware also make very suitable surfaces. Another advantage is that Van Gogh Oil Pastels are not dusty. This means your work is less vulnerable, so that oil pastels are excellent for outdoor work.

STEP-BY-STEP PROJECT
To inspire you will find a step-by-step project below. With the set of 24 pastels you can produce this beautiful drawing. The numbers of the colours used can be found on the colour chart.

The initial sketch is made with colour 623.5.

Step 2
Use 201.5 and 205.5 for the sunflowers, 411 .5 and 409.5 for the heart, and 623.5 and 508.5 for the leaves.

Step 3
Make the background with 522.5 and 100.5, expand the sunflowers with 201.5 and 202.5, the heart with 411.5, 409.5 and 227.5. For the leaves, use 201.5 and 508.5.

Finally, put in the highlights: 201 .5, 227.5, 409.5 and 700.5 for the flower hearts; 100.5 and 202.5 for the sunflowers; 570.5 for the background.

PROTECTION OF OIL PASTEL DRAWINGS

If you want to protect an oil pastel drawing properly, use Talens Oil Pastel varnish. The great advantage of this varnish is that the colours of the drawing do not change. The varnish is applied when the drawing is finished. Artists' Techniques
