Albert Handell and Leslie Trainor Handell take the artist’s perception of light to new heights in Intuitive Light by breaking down the science of light into basic, easy-to-understand concepts. They explore such areas as perceiving and interpreting the visual world, reality and illusion, mood and atmosphere.
Each of the book’s four parts is written so that you can read it from beginning to end or focus on specific topics. Either way, you gain a complete understanding of the subject.
In Part One: Seeing Light, the authors describe how to fully appreciate light. For example, “The Magic of Light” explains the fundamentals of light and its effects on objects. And “Light, Mood, and Feeling” explores your reactions to the varying amounts of light you experience. Part Two: The Nature of Light details how patterns of light and shade are created and shows why the quality of light in a painting is essential. You’ll learn about the impact of seasonal light upon subjects, as well as the directional movement of light. In addition to teaching you how to work with natural light, the authors explain how to successfully deal with artificial light, shadows, and reflections. Part Three: Technical Considerations in Painting Light discusses the various mediums available to you and how your choices influence the results you achieve. Part Four: Capturing the Illusion of Light reveals how to create paintings with a life of their own. Here, you’ll discover how to compose with light, achieve luminosity through variations of different colors of the same value, capture transitory moments, work in low and high key, define forms, and paint from photographs, drawings, and memory.
Intuitive Light is a beautiful, informative book on the critical role of light in art. Whether you are a beginning or an experienced painter, this title belongs on your bookshelf.
