by Tom Tierney
In the 1970s, motion pictures often abandoned traditional "happy endings" in favor of a grittier look at life. And instead of the sweet, innocuous heroines of the past, women were frequently portrayed as anti-heroines, as fallible, neurotic, and evil as their male counterparts-and every bit as interesting. For this collection, Torn Tierney has focused on eight female stars representative of this new kind of heroine, women who rose above being mere window dressing to become superstars in their own right. Each is shown as a paper doll with her costumes from four motion pictures. Among the actresses and outfits included here are Liza Minelli dressed in one of her nightclub costumes from Cabaret, Diane Keaton in baggy pants, vest, and tie from Annie Hall; Susan Sarandon, wearing turn-of-the-century lingerie in Pretty Baby; Faye Dunaway in a white satin evening gown worn in Network; and Sally Field in T-shirt, apron, and jeans from Norma Rae. Also shown are Meryl Streep in a pink bridesmaid gown from The Deer Hunter, Ann-Margret in silver lame lounging pajamas worn in Tommy, and
Goldie Hawn wearing a mini-evening dress in Shampoo.
