String Games

The making of string figures is, by some accounts themost global and ancient of any of humankind's games. String games are native to hundreds of countries, including those as diverse as Australia, Paraguay, Ireland and new Guinea. Inclues seven new string games.

Chinese Jump Rope
by Anne Akers Johnson
A definition first: Unlike the ordinary kind, Chinese jump rope is played around the ankles (and sometimes knees) of two players (the enders). A large elastic band is stretched between them and a player, the jumper, has to bounce over, onto, around and through the loop. A miss means a itch with one of the enders. The steps are simple at first - but get more and more tricky as levels are passed.if any of the above paragraph was news to you, the chances are excellent that you are not a ten-year old girl. Chinese jump rope is an around-the-world playground universal. in a lot of elementary schools, it's basically a requirement for admission and a book about it has been suggested to us more times, by more people, over more years, than anyother thing we've ever done. So - finally - we're doing it. (We have no idea why we waited this long).
Anne Johnson, whose books now number in the millions, did the playground research and wrote the text. Sara Boore, one of our veteran illustrators, and Mary Thelen (a first-timer with us) did the artwork. We are most happy with the mix and most happy with the entire project, which came together beautifully. Packaged with the book are two sturdy elastic jump ropes, two different lengths for all the different games (nine are described in the full-color book, along with instructions for making your own rope).
For those who believe in omens and repeating history and that sort of thing, the last timewe did a smallish book like this on a playground classic, packaged with everything you need to play it, was three years ago. It was called Cat's Cradle.
PACKAGED WITH: Two Chinese jump ropes.
WIRE-0 BOUND. 66 pages. Full color. 9 1/2"x5".
