An American painter who spent much of her childhood in Europe, Mary Cassatt (1845-1926) eventually settled in Paris, became a member of the Impressionist group, and worked closely with Edgar Degas. Best remembered for her charming portraits of mothers and their children, she is today widely regarded as America's greatest female painter.
