Until its fall in 1453, the Byzantine Empire encompassed much ofthe old Roman Empire, Syria, Russia, and many countries in eastern Europe. As a result, clothing styles in these areas were an exotic blend of eastern and western influences, displaying a sumptuous richness of color, fabric, and ornament. For this exciting coloring book collection, Tom Tierney has meticulously rendered 45 Byzantine garments as depicted in ancient mosaics and sculptures. Included are clothing styles worn by all classes?from simple 4th-century gowns to the finely brocaded robes of the Emperor Constantine. Among the illustrations are a shepherd wearing a short tunic, long stockings, and leather boots; a priest dressed for a religious festival in a pallium decorated with black crosses; royal wedding garb, heavily embroidered with jewels; a court dancer wearing a brocaded silk gown with bell sleeves and a hat of brightly colored straw and beads; and a host of other costumes. Shoes, boots, and hairstyles worn by both men and women, as well as ornamental jewelry of the period are also presented in a collection certain to delight and inspire colorists, costume designers, and fashion historians.
