by John Montroll
One of the foremost practitioners of the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, John Montroll has over a dozen origami books for Dover to his credit. This latest volume provides beginning and more advanced paperfolders with all the directions they need for creating a host of fascinating creatures, including birds, dinosaurs and reptiles, mammals-even a horse with rider. Following a brief introduction explaining origami basics, the author describes new techniques that add three-dimensional, lifelike qualities to each of the 25 models featured. Hobbyists will also find a very helpful section on wet-folding, a technique using thick, lightly moistened paper that allows paperfolders to have greater control over the shape of the figure. Moreover, when completed and dried, the model is harder and more permanent than ones formed from regular origami paper. All subjects are keyed according to difficulty-from the easiest (a duck and a swan) to more challenging projects such as a crocodile, kangaroo and other fascinating figures. Each project includes a photograph of the finished model as well as easy-to-follow diagrammed instructions.
