Mention the terms "Arctic" and "Antarctic" and what comes to mind? Most likely, frozen wastelands and mountains of ice, completely devoid of life. This fascinating coloring book by nature artist Ruth Soffer reveals, on the contrary, an abundance of diverse life forms in these two polar regions. Forty-f our excellent and realistically rendered illustrations depict, among other flora and fauna, the minke and sei whales, a sea spider and deep-sea vegetation, the leopard seal basking on an ice floe, Weddell seals and a pup, as well as king and emperor penguins in the Antarctic regions. Engaging portraits of Arctic inhabitants include the Arctic hare and grey wolf, terns and humpback whales, baby harp seals and a sea snail, and Atlantic puffins among Arctic poppies. Subjects are shown in native habitats and are described in accompanying captions.
